SUPERVISOR LOU CORREA ANNOUNCES BID FOR STATE SENATE
Former Assemblyman Sees Critical Need for Better Schools,
More Affordable Prescription Drugs and Health Care,
and New Roads to Accommodate Growth
SANTA ANA – Today Orange County Supervisor Lou
Correa announced he will run the California State Senate
seat being vacated by Senator Joe Dunn (SD-34), citing
the need for strong representation in Sacramento to
improve public schools, provide more affordable prescription
drugs and health care, and bring home state funding
to build badly-needed roads in Orange County.
“I’ve lived in central Orange County for
more than forty years. I have represented the heart
of Orange County on the Board of Supervisors as well
as in the California State Assembly, and I understand
all too well how critical it is to adequately fund our
classrooms and schools,” Correa said. “This
is at the heart of our priorities in Orange County –
we simply want to have good public schools, affordable
prescription drugs and health care, decent paying jobs,
safe neighborhoods, and good streets and highways.”
“Our region needs a leader who will fight to
ensure that we our fair share of the resources we need
to build roads and schools, as well as to assure that
such proposals are fiscally sound,” Correa added.
“We must also continue to fight for our fair share
of property tax revenues. Orange County receives less
than eleven cents of each dollar of property taxes we
send to Sacramento.”
“This is a very important time for our region
and for our state, and I believe I am the right person
to get the job done,” Correa added. “As
an Orange County Supervisor, I have first-hand working
knowledgeable of exactly what our area needs to accommodate
growth; and as a former legislator, I know how to work
with both sides of the aisle to make that happen in
Sacramento.”
Correa currently represents the cities of Garden Grove,
Santa Ana, Westminster, Midway City and other unincorporated
county land on the Board of Supervisors. From 1998 to
2004, he represented the 69th Assembly District in Orange
County.
Correa grew up in Anaheim. He is a product of the Anaheim
public school system, where he attended Ben Franklin
Elementary, Fremont Junior High and Anaheim High School.
He holds degrees in Economics from California State
University, Fullerton, and Jurist Doctorate Degree (JD)
and Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from the
University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
Long active in community affairs, Correa taught in
the Rancho Santiago Community College District and continues
to work to ensure the affordability of higher education
for all Californians. He presently serves on the County
Mental Health Board, the Children First Families Commission
(Prop. 10), the Orange County Transportation Authority
and the Regional Transportation Agencies Coalition.
He is also a member of the Anaheim Sunrise Rotary Club,
and past member of the Orange County Community Development
Council, the county’s anti-poverty council, the
California Small Business board, and the Orange County
Boy Scouts Board of Directors. Prior to serving in the
California State legislature, he was an investment banker
and a real estate broker. He is licensed with the California
Real Estate Board and the California State Bar. Supervisor
Correa lives in Santa Ana with his wife, Dr. Esther
Correa, and their four children, Alex, Andres, Adan
and Emilia.
